Hoof

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A hoof is a special part of an animal's foot. It is the tip of a toe on an ungulate mammal. This part is covered by a thick layer of keratin. Keratin is a tough and horny material. The hoof helps the animal in many ways. It supports the animal's weight as it moves. It also helps the animal grip the ground. This grip is called traction.

Hooves protect the soft tissues and bones inside. They also help soak up the impact when an animal strikes the ground.

Inside the hoof, there are many different parts working together. The hoof wall is the outer part. It has four layers on the outside. These layers are the stratum externum, stratum medium, stratum internum, and the dermis parietis. The stratum medium makes up most of the wall. Inside the wall, a soft tissue structure called a laminar junction helps the hoof. This structure binds the wall to the bone. The hoof also has a sole and a frog. The animal's weight is usually carried by the sole and the edge of the wall.

Different animals have different kinds of hooves. Some animals are called artiodactyls, which means they have an even number of toes. Many of these have a cloven hoof. A cloven hoof is split into two main claws. Examples include sheep, goats, deer, cattle, bison, and pigs. Some of these animals also have dewclaws. These are two smaller hooves higher up the leg. Mountain goats use dewclaws for extra traction on ice or snow.

Other animals are called perissodactyls. These have an odd number of toes. Horses have one hoof on each foot. Tapirs are unique because they have three toes on their back feet.

Hooves grow all the time. In the wild, animals wear them down naturally. Animals kept by humans might need extra care. For example, dairy cows often need their hooves trimmed. About 95% of lameness in dairy cattle happens in the feet. This can cause the cows to suffer or produce less milk. Professional hoof trimmers can trim more than 10,000 cows in one year. They might use a sharp knife or an angle grinder. They may also use copper sulfate pentahydrate to prevent foot rot.

Humans use special tools to help animals with hooves. Some animals walk on very hard ground. To stop their hooves from wearing out, people use horseshoes or oxshoes. You can see an oxshoe being used on a bull in Chinawal, India.

Hooves are also important in human history. They have been used in many different ceremonies and games. Some people have even used them in burial ceremonies. Taking care of hooves is a big job in the horse and cow industries. A healthy hoof helps an animal stay strong and move well.
