A claw is a curved and pointed part found at the end of a toe or finger.

Most animals called amniotes have them. This group includes mammals, reptiles, and birds. Some tiny creatures like beetles and spiders have similar hooked parts to help them grip. Even crabs and lobsters have parts called chelae, which people often call claws. These tools are very important for survival in the wild. They help animals hunt, climb, or protect themselves from danger.

A true claw is made of a hard protein called keratin. It is built using two different layers. The outer layer is called the unguis. This layer is very hard and grows outward quickly. The bottom layer is called the subunguis. This part is softer and grows thicker as it moves. Because the top layer grows faster, it creates a natural curve. The thin sides wear down faster than the middle. This way of working produces a sharp point at the end.

Many mammals use claws in special ways. Most cats belong to the family Felidae. Almost all members of this family have protractile claws. This means they can hide their claws inside their paws. Hiding them helps protect the claws from wear and tear. Dogs and cats also have a dewclaw on their front paws. This claw does not touch the ground much. Because of this, it stays longer and sharper than the others.

Different animals have very different kinds of claws. Some birds of prey use sharp claws called talons to catch food.

Other birds like the hoatzin have claws on their wings when they are chicks. This helps them climb trees. Some reptiles, like lizards, use stout claws to climb or hold prey. Even the African clawed frog has claws. This is special because claws evolved separately in frogs and other animals.

You can see how claws relate to things you know. Humans have nails instead of claws. A nail is like a claw, but it is flat. It has a curved edge instead of a sharp point. In primates, the bottom layer of the claw has disappeared. This change helped our ancestors develop hands for grasping. Some large nails can even become hooves. A hoof is just a very big nail that can hold weight.
