A cuticle is a tough and flexible outer covering. It protects many different living things. This layer is not always the same for every organism. It can have different structures and chemical parts. Scientists use the word for many different things in nature.

It acts like a shield for a plant or an animal.

In humans, the word cuticle has a few meanings. It can mean the thickened skin around your nails. This part is called the eponychium. It can also mean the outer layer of a hair shaft. This layer is made of dead cells called the cuticula pili. These cells help lock the hair into its follicle. Sometimes, people use it to mean the epidermis, which is the outer skin.

Many animals use a cuticle to stay safe. Invertebrates like roundworms and arthropods have a multi-layered cuticle. For roundworms, it is made of proteins and special parts called cuticlins. Arthropods use a substance called chitin. Chitin is a type of sugar called a polysaccharide. These parts link together to make the shell strong. Some beetles, like the mealworm beetle, use color in their cuticle. Darker colors might help them fight off germs.

Plants also grow a protective cuticle on their leaves. This layer is made of waxy parts called cutin or cutan. The wax helps the plant keep water inside. It also stops germs from getting in. Some plants, like cacti, have very thick cuticles. This helps them live in dry, desert places. Other plants use thick cuticles to stay safe from salt spray near the sea.

Some plants have a very special way of staying clean. The sacred lotus is a famous example. Its surface is so waxy that it is called hydrophobic. This means it does not like water. Water beads up and rolls off the leaf. This is known as the Lotus effect. The tiny, bumpy shape of the surface helps the water roll away. As the water moves, it carries dust and dirt with it. This keeps the plant very clean.
