Your body has a special outer layer called the integumentary system.

This system includes your skin, hair, nails, and even scales or feathers. It works like a shield for your body. It creates a physical barrier between your insides and the outside world. This system helps keep your water levels steady. It also helps you feel things like heat, cold, and pressure.

Without this layer, your internal organs would not be safe.

The skin is made of different layers that work together. The top layer is called the epidermis. It is a strong layer that acts as the first line of defense. This layer has five parts called strata. The deepest part is the stratum basale, where new cells grow. These cells move up to become the stratum corneum. In thick places like your palms, there is an extra layer called the stratum lucidum. The epidermis has no blood, so it gets food from the layer below.

Beneath the epidermis lies the dermis. This layer supports the top layer and gives skin its stretch. The dermis has two parts called the papillary and reticular layers. It contains many important things like blood vessels and glands. It also holds hair roots and sensory nerve endings. These nerves allow you to feel pain or a light touch. Collagen and elastin help the skin stay flexible. This prevents the skin from wrinkling or sagging too easily.

Below the dermis is a layer called the hypodermis. This is also known as the subcutaneous layer. It is made of special cells called adipocytes. These cells are very good at storing fat. The fat in the hypodermis acts like a heat insulator. This helps your body stay warm. The stored fat also serves as an energy reserve. Your body can turn this fat into energy when you work hard.

In humans, the skin is a huge organ. It covers about 1.5 to 2 square meters of surface area. It also makes up 12 to 15 percent of your total body weight. Your nails are also part of this system. They are made of a tough protein called keratin. Nails grow from a spot called the nail matrix. They grow at an average rate of 1 mm every week. Only primates have nails, while other animals have claws or hooves.
