A claw is a sharp, curved part on a toe.

Most animals have them. They are made of a hard protein called keratin.

Claws have two layers. The top layer is the unguis. It is the hard outer part. The bottom layer is the subunguis. This part is softer and flaky. The top layer grows faster than the bottom. This makes the claw curve. The thin sides wear away. This creates a sharp point.

Many animals use claws in different ways. Cats use them to catch prey.

Most cats have retractable claws. This means they can hide them inside their paws. This stops the claws from wearing out.

Birds also have claws. A bird of prey uses a claw called a talon.

These talons help them catch food. Some lizards use claws to climb.

Other animals use them to dig or to stay safe. Even some beetles have tiny claws to help them grip surfaces.
