Toes are the small digits at the end of a foot. They play a huge role in how animals move around. Some animals, like cats, walk on their toes. This way of walking is called digitigrade. Humans are different because we are plantigrade. This means we walk on the soles of our feet. Other animals, called unguligrade, walk on the hard tips of their toes using hooves.

Inside your toes, there are small bones called phalanges. Most toes have three of these bones: the proximal, middle, and distal bones. The big toe, or hallux, is special because it only has two bones. These bones connect at places called interphalangeal joints. The first bone of the toe connects to the foot at the metatarsophalangeal joint.

Muscles and tendons make the toes move. Most toes move together because of how the muscles attach to the bones. However, the hallux and the little toe have their own unique muscles to help them move separately.

Words for toes have long histories. The Old English word for toe is "tā". This comes from a group of very old languages. It might have once meant "fingers" too. Many different languages use one word for both fingers and toes. In Latin, people used special names for the big toe. Today, we use a blend of those old names.

There is a lot of variety in how toes look. Most people have five toes on each foot. Some people are born with more than five, which is called polydactyly.

You might also see a toe that is longer or shorter than others. For example, some people have a longer second toe instead of a longer big toe. This is sometimes called Morton's toe. Scientists have even studied how toe shapes can relate to where a person's family comes from.

Toes are very important for your daily life. They help you keep your balance while standing up. They also help you push off the ground when you walk.

Sometimes, toes can get hurt. You might stub a toe on something hard. This can hurt the small joints. It is also important to wear shoes that fit well. If shoes are too tight, they can cause the toes to move out of place or cause pain.
