Most people have five toes on each foot.

These toes help you balance and walk. They also help you push off the ground.

Inside your toes are small bones called phalanges.

Most toes have three of these bones. The big toe, or hallux, only has two. These bones connect at joints. We call these interphalangeal joints.

Muscles and tendons help your toes move. Tendons are like strong cords. They connect muscles to your bones. Most toes move together. This is because of how the muscles attach. However, the big toe and little toe have their own special muscles.

Nerves give your toes feeling. They tell your brain about touch.

Different nerves cover different parts of the toe.

Sometimes, people are born with more than five toes. This is called polydactyly.

Some people also have different toe shapes. These shapes can change how shoes fit. Small injuries can happen too. You might stub a toe. This can hurt the small joints.
