In humans, there are 56 phalanges. We have 14 in each hand and foot. Most fingers have three bones. The thumb and big toe only have two. We name these bones by where they sit. The proximal phalanges are closest to the hand or foot. The intermediate phalanx is in the middle. The distal phalanges are at the very tips.

These bones work together at joints. In the hand, the knobby parts are called knuckles. The tips of the finger bones have flat parts. We call these apical tufts. They help support your nails and your fingertip pads. This helps you grab things with a strong grip.

Different animals use these bones in different ways. Whales have many extra bones in their fins. This is called hyperphalangy. This helps them swim. Sloths have long bones at their tips. This helps them hang from tree branches.
