You can split the foot into three parts. The hindfoot is at the back. It has the talus, or ankle bone. It also has the calcaneus, or heel bone. The middle part is the midfoot. It has five bones that make arches. These arches act like shock absorbers.

The front part is the forefoot. It has five toes. The bones in your toes are called phalanges. The big toe has two phalanges. The other four toes have three each.

Muscles help your feet move. Some muscles start in your leg. These are called extrinsic muscles. Other muscles stay inside the foot. These are called intrinsic muscles. These muscles work together to help you walk and run.
