Muscles are what make the foot move. Some muscles start in the lower leg; these are called extrinsic muscles. Others start inside the foot itself; these are called intrinsic muscles.

Many extrinsic muscles attach to the bones of the foot. For example, the triceps surae is a group of muscles in the back of the leg. Its tendons join to form the Achilles tendon. This tendon attaches to the calcaneus. This group of muscles is very important for activities like ballet dancing. Other muscles, like the ones in the sole, help move the toes.

Because feet touch the ground, they can get hurt or sick. People can get things like athlete's foot or bunions. Some people are born with different foot shapes, like clubfoot.

The second section is the midfoot. This area consists of five irregular bones: the cuboid, the navicular, and three cuneiform bones. These bones form the arches of the foot. The third section is the forefoot. This part contains the five toes and the metatarsus, which is a group of five proximal long bones.

The bones within the forefoot have specific names. The bones of the toes are called phalanges. The big toe contains two phalanges. The other four toes each contain three phalanges. There are two main types of joints in this area. Interphalangeal joints are located between the phalanges. Metatarsophalangeal joints, or MTP joints, are located between the metatarsus and the phalanges. Some people also have sesamoid bones near the MTP joints. These are most regularly found near the distal portion of the first metatarsal bone.

A vital part of foot mechanics is the arch system. The human foot features two longitudinal arches and one transverse arch. These arches are maintained by interlocking bone shapes, strong ligaments, and pulling muscles.

The medial longitudinal arch curves above the ground and stretches from the heel to the three medial metatarsals. The lateral longitudinal arch is much lower. It uses the cuboid as a keystone to redistribute weight to the calcaneus and the fifth metatarsal. The two longitudinal arches act as pillars for the transverse arch. These arches provide mobility when weight is applied. This movement makes walking and running more economical by saving energy.

Muscles drive the movement of the foot through two different groups. Extrinsic muscles originate on the anterior or posterior parts of the lower leg. Intrinsic muscles originate on the dorsal or plantar aspects of the foot itself.

Most extrinsic muscles from the lower leg attach to the foot bones. The posterior group includes the triceps surae, which is made of the soleus and the gastrocnemius. Their tendons merge into the Achilles tendon, which attaches to the calcaneus. This group is the primary plantar flexor. The anterior group includes muscles like the tibialis anterior, which helps dorsiflex the foot. These muscles work together to lift the foot or move the toes.

Intrinsic muscles are located within the foot to provide fine control. On the top of the foot, muscles like the extensor digitorum brevis help dorsiflex the digits. In the sole, or plantar aspect, there are three muscle groups. There are muscles for the big toe, such as the abductor hallucis. There are muscles for the little toe, such as the abductor digiti minimi. Finally, there is a central muscle group. This includes the lumbricals and the flexor digitorum brevis. These muscles are essential for maintaining the arches and moving the individual toes.

Because of their role in weight-bearing, feet are vulnerable to various issues. They are exposed to infections and injuries like athlete's foot, bunions, and plantar fasciitis. Some people experience stress fractures or Morton's neuroma.

Genetic disorders can also affect foot shape, resulting in conditions like clubfoot or flat feet. Even footwear can impact health. Wearing certain shoes, such as sneakers or boots, can impede proper alignment in the ankle and foot. Understanding these complex structures helps us realize how much the foot contributes to overall movement and stability.
