The foot is a very important part of the body. It sits at the very end of a limb. Its main jobs are to carry weight and help animals move from place to place.

Many different animals have feet. Some of these feet even have claws or nails on them. For humans, the foot is a strong and complex machine. It is made of many different parts working together.

Inside a human foot, there are 26 bones and 33 joints. A joint is a place where bones meet.

You can think of the foot in three main sections. The hindfoot is at the back and includes the talus, or ankle bone. It also has the calcaneus, which is the heel bone. The midfoot is the middle section. It uses five irregular bones to create arches. These arches act like shock absorbers for your body.

The forefoot is the front part. It contains the five toes and the metatarsus. The bones in your toes are called phalanges. The big toe has two phalanges, but the other four toes have three each.

These bones stay in place thanks to muscles and ligaments. The foot has two longitudinal arches and one transverse arch. These arches are held up by the shapes of the bones and pulling muscles.

When you walk or run, these arches move slightly. This movement helps your body use energy more easily. The medial longitudinal arch curves above the ground. The lateral longitudinal arch is much lower. If the tendons or ligaments are under too much strain, a person might get flat feet.

Muscles are what make the foot move. Some muscles start in the lower leg; these are called extrinsic muscles. Others start inside the foot itself; these are called intrinsic muscles.

Many extrinsic muscles attach to the bones of the foot. For example, the triceps surae is a group of muscles in the back of the leg. Its tendons join to form the Achilles tendon. This tendon attaches to the calcaneus. This group of muscles is very important for activities like ballet dancing. Other muscles, like the ones in the sole, help move the toes.

Because feet touch the ground, they can get hurt or sick. People can get things like athlete's foot or bunions. Some people are born with different foot shapes, like clubfoot.

The way we wear shoes can also change how our feet move. Sneakers and boots might change how the ankle and foot line up. Understanding the foot helps us take better care of our bodies. It shows us how much work our feet do every single day.
