Ruminant

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Some animals eat plants in a very special way. These animals are called ruminants.

There are about 200 species of ruminants. This group includes cows, sheep, goats, and deer. Even tall giraffes are ruminants!

To get nutrients from plants, they use a special stomach. This stomach has four parts.

Abomasum (PSF)
Abomasum (PSF)

The first two parts are the rumen and the reticulum. These two parts work together like a big vat. Tiny living things called microbes live here. These microbes help break down tough plant parts. This is called fermentation.

When the food is ready, the animal brings it back up. This soft food is called cud. The animal chews the cud again. This helps break the food into even smaller bits. This makes it easier to get power from the plants.

After that, the food goes to the omasum. This part helps control what passes through. Finally, the food reaches the abomasum. This is the true stomach. It uses acids to finish the job. Then, the food moves to the small intestine to be fully used.
