Protoceratidae was a family of plant-eating animals. They lived in North America a long time ago. These animals were artiodactyls. This means they were even-toed ungulates. They looked a lot like deer. Some were small like a roe deer. Others were large like an elk. They were 1 to 2 meters long.

They ate tough grasses. They had teeth like cattle. They also had a complex stomach. This stomach was like a camel's stomach. Many of them may have lived in herds.

The males had very special horns. Most horns grow on top of the head. These animals had extra horns above their noses. These are called rostral horns. Some horns were in pairs. Others were joined at the base. The horns were likely covered in skin. This is like the ossicones on a giraffe. Females had small horns or none at all. Males may have used horns to fight. They might also use them to show off. This happened during the Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene, and Pliocene eras.
