Cainotheriidae

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Cainotheriidae were a family of small animals. They lived in Europe a long time ago. These animals were about the size of rabbits. They belonged to a group called artiodactyls.

Their bodies had some very strange parts. They had large auditory bullae. These are protective bones for the ear. These big ear bones helped them hear well. Their teeth were also special. The teeth had curved edges. These edges helped them chew food.

Their legs were built for moving. The back legs were much longer than the front legs. This helped them run and jump. They had four toes on each foot. Each toe ended in a long claw.

Scientists used to think they lived just like rabbits. But new finds in Spain show a different way. They moved more like small ruminants. Ruminants are animals like deer. These animals lived while Europe was warm. Later, the climate became colder. This change made the cainotheriids die out. The last ones lived during the middle Miocene. Many species lived in Europe at that time.
