Mesonychids were a group of old mammals. Their name means "middle claws."

These animals lived in Asia, Europe, and North America. They lived a long time ago. They were some of the first large meat-eaters in Asia. Most of them ate meat or fish. Some also ate many kinds of food. This means they were omnivores.

Mesonychids had very unique bodies. They had large heads and long necks. They had four toes on each foot. These toes had hard hooves.

Over time, their bodies changed. Their legs changed to help them run fast. Their jaws changed to help them bite with great force. Their teeth were also special. They had sharp teeth for cutting meat.

Scientists used to think mesonychids were the ancestors of whales. Now, they think this is not true. They think whales and mesonychids were just close relatives. This happened through convergent evolution. This is when different animals develop similar parts to solve similar problems.

Most mesonychids died out a long time ago. Only one kind, called Mongolestes, lived into the Early Oligocene.
