Since then, many different scientists have tried to place them in the tree of life. Cope originally assigned them to Creodonta in 1880 and 1889. In 1919, Peterson assigned them to Carnivora. Later, researchers like Carroll and Zhou et al. placed them in Mesonychia. Archibald even suggested a connection to Cete, which relates to whales, in 1998.

Modern science has changed how we view their significance. For a long time, scientists thought mesonychids were the direct ancestors of whales. This idea was based on the fact that their skulls and teeth look similar to early whales. However, recent fossil discoveries have overturned this theory. The current consensus is that whales are highly derived artiodactyls, which are hoofed mammals. Now, some researchers believe mesonychids are a sister group to whales or artiodactyls. This means they are close relatives rather than direct ancestors.

One of the most interesting facts about mesonychids is their appearance. They are often described by people as "wolves on hooves." This nickname comes from their combination of predator and hoofed-animal features.
