For many years, scientists debated where this animal fit on the tree of life. Early researchers placed it in the families Mesonychidae or Arctocyonidae. Some even thought it was a close relative of whales. Today, researchers consider it the only member of its own family, Andrewsarchidae. Recent studies in 2023 suggest it is part of a group called Cetancodontamorpha. This makes it closely related to entelodonts, hippos, and whales. 
The discovery of Andrewsarchus began with a 1923 expedition by the American Museum of Natural History. A local man named Kan Chuen-pao, also known as "Buckshot," helped recover a nearly complete cranium. This specimen, known as the holotype, was later described by Henry Fairfield Osborn in 1924. The skull was initially mistaken for an entelodon by Walter Granger. Later, William Diller Matthew identified it as a primitive mesonychid. 
Scientists have identified more than one species within this genus. The first is Andrewsarchus mongoliensis, based on the original skull. A second species, Andrewsarchus crassum, was named in 1977 using teeth from the Dongjun Formation. Other fossils, such as a mandible from the Lushi Formation, were once called Paratriisodon. However, researchers like Leigh Van Valen and Maureen O'Leary later determined these belonged to Andrewsarchus. They noted similarities in the molars, premolars, and body size.
The physical structure of the skull provides clues about how the animal lived. The holotype skull is 60 centimeters long and features a very elongated snout. While early estimates suggested it was a massive predator, modern views are more cautious. The skull has a reduced sagittal crest, which is a ridge on top of the head. It also has a relatively flat mandibular fossa, the socket where the jaw connects. These features suggest that Andrewsarchus had a fairly weak bite force. 
Its teeth also suggest it was not a specialized meat-eater. Andrewsarchus lacked the sharp, meat-slicing carnassial teeth found in hypercarnivores. Instead, its molars and premolars have wrinkled crowns. This dental pattern is common in omnivorous animals like pigs. Because of this, many scientists believe it was an omnivore or a scavenger. Some researchers even suggest it may have preyed on brontotheres, which were large, ancient mammals. 
The environment of the Middle Eocene was very different from today. The Earth experienced a hothouse climate with humid, tropical conditions and high rainfall. Andrewsarchus lived in areas like the Irdin Manha, Lushi, and Dongjun Formations. In these ecosystems, it shared the landscape with many other creatures. These included early primates, rodents, and various species of mesonychids and perissodactyls. Studying these fossils helps scientists understand how mammals diversified during this warm period.
