Chalicotheres were a group of old animals. They lived long ago in Asia, Europe, Africa, and North America.

These animals were not like modern horses. Most odd-toed animals have hard hooves. But chalicotheres had large claws. They used these claws to pull branches toward them. This helped them reach leaves and fruit to eat. Some also ate bark and twigs.

Scientists divide them into two groups. The first group is called Chalicotheriinae. These had very long front legs. They likely lived in thick woods. The second group is Schizotheriinae. These had legs that were more even in size. They lived in many different places, including open areas. Some of these animals could stand up on their back legs to feed.

An old animal called Anisodon grande.

Chalicotheres came in many sizes. Some were small like an antelope. Others were big like a large horse. Finding their bones was hard work. At first, some people thought they were giant pangolins. It took many years to realize the teeth and claws belonged to the same animal.
