Palaeotheriidae were a family of plant-eating mammals. They lived in Europe and Asia long ago.

These animals are part of a group called Equoidea. This group also includes modern horses and zebras.

Palaeotheres came in many different sizes. Some were very small. Other species were large.

One big species was Palaeotherium magnum. It was about the size of a modern horse. Their teeth were brachydont. This means they had low crowns.

Early members of this family ate fruit. Later, the larger members were browsers. Browsers are animals that eat leaves and twigs.

These animals went extinct about 33 million years ago. This happened during a time called the Grande Coupure. The Earth became much colder then. Ice began to form at the South Pole. This change made the world drier. The thick forests disappeared. New animals arrived from Asia. These new animals were better at living in the new world. This made it hard for the Palaeotheriidae to survive.
