These animals lived a long time ago. They first appeared in North America. Later, they moved into Eurasia. They had long, flat heads. Most had long bodies and short legs. They also had large claws.

Some oxyaenids lived on the forest floor. They walked on flat feet. This is different from most meat eaters today. Most modern meat eaters walk on their toes.

Other oxyaenids lived in the trees. These were the Machaeroidinae. This group had long, thin bodies. They had strong arms to grab things. They also had long, thin teeth. We call these saber teeth. These hunters lived in thick forests. They might drop from trees onto prey.

One big oxyaenid was named Sarkastodon. It may have weighed a lot. Most oxyaenids were medium-sized. But some might be the first large meat eaters. They went extinct when the thick jungles changed. The world became more open. Their stiff spines made it hard to run fast.
