Hyaenodonts were a group of meat-eating mammals.

They lived a long time ago. They lived in many places like Africa, Asia, and North America. Some hyaenodonts were small like dogs. Other kinds were very large. One kind, called Megistotherium, was a giant.

Their bodies were built for hunting. Most had sharp teeth called carnassials. These teeth worked like scissors to cut meat.

Unlike modern carnivores, they had many pairs of these teeth. They also had a strong sense of smell. Some hyaenodonts even lived in water like otters.

Why did they disappear? Some experts think they lost a fight for food. They say other meat-eaters, called carnivorans, were better hunters. Other experts think the weather changed. The world became drier. This changed the forests where they lived. As the plants and prey changed, the hyaenodonts could not survive. They went extinct about 10 million years ago.
