Therocephalians were a group of animals from long ago. Their name means "beast-heads." This is because they had very large skulls.

Most of them were carnivores. This means they ate meat. Some even had a venomous bite.

Scientists think these animals were close relatives of mammals. They are part of a group called therapsids.

These animals lived in many places. We find their fossils in South Africa, China, and even Antarctica. Most lived during the Permian and Triassic periods. Some lived in the water. They may have used whiskers to feel things. Other types ate plants. They had wide teeth with many ridges.

Many therocephalians died out during a big extinction event. This was a time when many species disappeared. A few survived for a while. But they eventually died out too. This might have happened because of climate change. They also had to compete with other animals.

Eventually, only their close cousins, the cynodonts, stayed on Earth.
