These animals lived in many different ways. Most early therocephalians were carnivores. They had large canine teeth for hunting meat. Some, like the genus Euchambersia, may have even had venomous bites. This would make them the oldest tetrapods known to have this trait. Other groups, like the Baurioidea, were more specialized. Some baurioids were herbivores. They had wide teeth with many ridges to grind up plants. Others, like the small ictidosuchids, may have been aquatic. These water-dwellers might have had scleral rings in their eyes. These rings would help stabilize the eye against water pressure.

Scientists have spent a century refining how we classify these animals. Robert Broom first named the order in 1903. He used fossils like Scylacosaurus to define the group. At first, Broom thought therocephalians were a "primitive" group that gave rise to other therapsids. This idea is known as being paraphyletic. Modern science views them differently. Most researchers now see them as the sister clade to the cynodonts. This means they share a common ancestor with cynodonts. Together, they form a larger group called Eutheriodontia.

Therocephalian fossils tell us where these animals traveled. Most fossils are found in the Karoo of South Africa. However, they have also been found in Russia, China, Tanzania, and Zambia. Understanding therocephalians helps us understand convergent evolution. This happens when different animals evolve similar traits independently. For example, some therocephalians and cynodonts both lost the postorbital bar. This is the bone behind the eye. They also both developed similar teeth. These similarities show how different paths can lead to similar biological solutions. While therocephalians did not become mammals, they were part of the great transition toward mammalian life.
