In a stereospondylous condition, the vertebral position consists mostly of the intercentrum. This is a specific part of the vertebra alongside the neural arch. However, there was great variety in these bone shapes. Some had a "diplospondylous" condition. In these cases, the arch sat between the intercentrum and the pleurocentrum. Others showed a "plagiosaurid" condition. There, a single large bone called a centrum was present.

Scientists first recognized this group in 1888. A researcher named Zittel defined the group based on vertebral structures. He studied well-known fossils like Mastodonsaurus and Metoposaurus. The following year, in 1889, Fraas coined the descriptor "stereospondylous." This helped categorize the specific bone arrangements found in these animals. Because their bone shapes varied so much, the definition of Stereospondyli has been revised many times by different researchers. They also shared other features, such as a stapedial groove and a tight connection between the parasphenoid and the pterygoid bones.

The evolutionary history of these amphibians began in the early Permian.

Fragmentary remains of a rhinesuchid from Brazil represent this early appearance. Rhinesuchids are among the earliest known stereospondyl groups. Most rhinesuchids lived during the late Permian. Only one species, Broomistega putterilli, is known from the Early Triassic of South Africa. Most other stereospondyl groups did not appear until after the Paleozoic era. During that time, different types of amphibians still dominated the landscape.

Stereospondyls survived a massive global extinction event. Following the Permo-Triassic mass extinction, they became very common in the fossil record. They are especially well-represented in fossils from Russia, South Africa, and Australia.

Some scientists, like Yates and Warren, proposed a specific theory about this. They suggested stereospondyls lived in a high-latitude refugium. This means they stayed in a sheltered area, perhaps near Australia or Antarctica. This area might have protected them from the global effects of the extinction. Another theory suggests they spread out from western Gondwana in South America. By the end of the Early Triassic, almost all major groups had appeared.

These animals lived very different lifestyles. Some were small, like the lapellopsids and lydekkerinids. These smaller species were likely capable of moving on land.

Most stereospondyls, however, were much larger and lived in the water. They were often "obligately aquatic," meaning they had to stay in water to survive. We know this from their anatomy. They had a lateral line system to feel vibrations in the water. Their skeletons were also poorly ossified, or not fully hardened into bone. Many had pachyostotic bones, which are very thick and heavy. This helped them stay submerged.

While most lived in freshwater, some trematosauroids were euryhaline. This means they could live in both fresh and salty water.

Stereospondyls were the last surviving group of temnospondyl amphibians. Most other temnospondyls died out when crocodile-like archosaurs diversified. Some groups, like the chigutisaurid brachyopoids, lasted into the Jurassic. The youngest known stereospondyl is Koolasuchus from the late Early Cretaceous of Australia. This is a very long time after the group first appeared. Some scientists even study a fossil called Chinlestegophis from North America. If it is a stem caecilian, it might change how we view stereospondyl survival. Regardless, they remain a vital subject for understanding ancient life.
