They began to disappear as the world changed. New animals arrived from North America. This happened when land connected the two continents. Humans also arrived in the Americas. This may have helped the litopterns go extinct.

Their name means "smooth heel." They were ungulates, which are animals with hooves. These animals lived for a very long time. They appeared about 62.5 million years ago. Most of them disappeared around 12,000 years ago.

Some might have even lived until 3,500 years ago. They were the second largest group of native South American hoofed animals.

These animals had many different ways of moving and eating. Most litopterns had hinge-like joints in their legs. This helped them walk like modern hoofed animals. Some families, like the Macraucheniidae, had long necks and long legs. They supported their weight on three toes. Other families, like the Proterotheriidae, used only one toe. This group included Thoatherium, which had even fewer toes than a modern horse. Some litopterns ate grass and leaves. Others might have eaten hard fruit.

Scientists have worked hard to learn where these animals came from. They believe litopterns came from ancient groups called "condylarths." These ancestors moved from North America to South America.

By looking at DNA and proteins, researchers found something amazing. They discovered that litopterns are true ungulates. They share a common ancestor with a group called Notoungulata. Their closest living relatives are Perissodactyla. This is the group that includes horses, rhinos, and tapirs. This split happened about 66 million years ago.

Litopterns were found in many different places and sizes. Some were very small, like the Protolipterna. Other animals, like the sparnotheriodontids, were much larger.

One famous animal was Macrauchenia. It was a large macraucheniid that weighed about one ton. These animals lived in South America and even West Antarctica. Scientists found fossils in the La Meseta Formation in Antarctica. This is the only record of litopterns on that continent. They belonged to nine different families.

Eventually, the world changed for the litopterns. The land between North and South America connected at the Isthmus of Panama. This allowed new animals from the north to move south. This event is called the Great American interchange.

The new animals competed with the litopterns. Climate change also made life harder for them. At the same time, the first humans arrived in the Americas. This may have helped cause their extinction. The last ones to survive were Macrauchenia, Xenorhinotherium, and Neolicaphrium.

Litopterna is an extinct order of South American native ungulates. The name Litopterna means "smooth heel." These animals were hoofed mammals that lived for millions of years. They first appeared during the early Paleocene, around 62.5 million years ago.

Most litopterns went extinct around 12,000 years ago. However, some evidence suggests they may have survived even longer. A 2025 study of a specimen suggests Xenorhinotherium lived until the late Holocene. This could mean they existed as recently as 3,500 to 4,200 years ago.

They were the second most diverse group of South American native ungulates.

Scientists have used advanced methods to understand their biology. Researchers sequenced the collagen proteome and the mitochondrial genome of Macrauchenia. This genetic work revealed that litopterns are true ungulates. They share a common ancestor with the Notoungulata group. Their closest living relatives are the Perissodactyla. This is the group that includes modern horses, rhinoceroses, and tapirs. This evolutionary split from Perissodactyla occurred about 66 million years ago.

They are part of a larger clade called Panperissodactyla.

The order is divided into nine distinct families. Two families, Proterotheriidae and Macraucheniidae, were the most diverse. They were also the last families to survive. The Macraucheniidae family is known for having long necks and long limbs. Some members, like Macrauchenia, were very large. They had body masses of about one ton. In contrast, many proterotheriids were smaller, with body masses around 10 kilograms. The Protolipternidae family contained very small animals. Protolipterna had an estimated body mass of only 2 kilograms. Other groups, like the sparnotheriodontids, were much larger, weighing around 100 kilograms.

Litopterns showed amazing physical adaptations for movement and eating. Many had hinge-like limb joints and hooves. This structure is very similar to modern ungulates. The way they carried weight varied by family. Macraucheniids supported their weight on three toes. Proterotheriids supported their weight on only one toe. The genus Thoatherium even showed more toe reduction than modern horses. Their teeth also helped define their diets. Members of the Megadolodinae subfamily had bunodont teeth. These are teeth with rounded cusps. This trait is unique among South American native ungulates. Some species were browsers, while others were mixed feeders. Some might have even been omnivorous, eating hard fruit.

The appearance of Macraucheniids provides a fascinating mystery. In the subfamily Macraucheniinae, the nasal opening migrated to the top of the skull. Historically, some scientists thought this meant they had a trunk. Other researchers have different ideas. They suggest they might have had a prehensile lip like a moose. Another possibility is a saiga-like nose used to filter dust.

The history of these animals is tied to changing continents. Litopterns likely originated from archaic "condylarths" that migrated from North America. They lived in South America and even West Antarctica. Fossils from the Eocene era were found in the La Meseta Formation. This is the only record of litopterns on the Antarctic continent.

Their decline began during the Pliocene and Pleistocene. This was caused by climatic change and new competition. The Isthmus of Panama formed, connecting North and South America. This created the Great American interchange. North American ungulates moved south and competed with the native litopterns.

Extinction eventually claimed the entire order. The end-Pleistocene extinction event wiped out most large mammals in the Americas. This event coincided with the arrival of the first humans on the continent. Some researchers believe that human hunting may have played a role. The last surviving genera were Macrauchenia, Xenorhinotherium, and Neolicaphrium.
