All dinocephalians had front teeth that locked together. This helped them slice food into small bits. This made it easier for them to digest. Later types even grew heels on their teeth. These heels met to create a surface for crushing food. Some were meat-eaters, some ate plants, and some ate both. This variety helped them fill many roles in nature.

They have found bones in Russia and China. They have also found them in Brazil and South Africa. Fossils are also in Zimbabwe and Tanzania. The biggest herbivores, like Tapinocephalus, were very heavy. Some omnivores, like Jonkeria, may have weighed up to 400 kilograms. The largest meat-eaters, like Titanophoneus, weighed about half a tonne.

These animals lived through big changes in Earth's history. They grew large as older animals, called pelycosaurs, began to die out.

However, the dinocephalians also faced a hard time. They all died out during the Capitanian mass extinction event. We do not know the exact reason why this happened. It could have been disease or sudden changes in the weather. After they were gone, smaller animals took their place.

Later dinocephalians developed even more advanced teeth. They grew heels on the lingual sides of their incisors. These heels met when the jaws shut to form a crushing surface.

Many dinocephalians are famous for their heavy, unusual skulls. Many species exhibited pachyostosis. This is the thickening of the bones in the skull. Scientists believe this was an adaptation for intra-specific behavior. This means they likely used their heads for head-butting. They may have done this to defend territory or to find a mate.

Some species also grew specialized structures on their heads. For example, Estemmenosuchus and Styracocephalus grew horn-like structures. These horns actually evolved independently in each case. This shows how different species developed their own unique ways to use their skulls.

Dinocephalians were quite large compared to other animals of their time. The largest herbivores, such as Tapinocephalus, were massive. The omnivore Jonkeria may have weighed up to 400 kilograms. The largest carnivores were also very heavy. Species like Titanophoneus and Anteosaurus were at least as long as the heavy herbivores. These large predators had masses of around a half-tonne. Their heavy skulls helped them function as top predators. Their size allowed them to dominate the Permian landscape for millions of years.

The evolutionary history of these animals is complex. Dinocephalians are an ancient group, so their exact ancestry is not clear. Scientists assume they evolved during the Roadian or Kungurian epochs. However, no fossils from those specific times have been found yet. Dinocephalians likely grew in number as pelycosaurs declined. Pelycosaurs were the dominant animals in the early Permian. It is possible that dinocephalians competed with pelycosaurs for resources. This competition may have contributed to the decline of the older group. During the Wordian and early Capitanian, they became a diverse megafauna.

The reign of the dinocephalians came to an abrupt end. They all died out during the Capitanian mass extinction event. This happened during the middle or late Capitanian age. Scientists are not entirely sure why they became extinct. Several factors might have caused this sudden disappearance. It could have been caused by widespread disease. Sudden climatic changes might have also played a role. Environmental stress is another possibility that scientists consider. Regardless of the cause, they were gone very quickly.

After the extinction, the ecosystem changed significantly. Dinocephalians were replaced by much smaller therapsids. These new animals included herbivorous dicynodonts. They also included carnivorous biarmosuchians, gorgonopsians, and therocephalians.

This shift shows how life recovers and changes after a mass extinction. The large, heavy-headed dinocephalians left a gap in the world. Smaller, more specialized animals moved in to fill those roles. Their fossils are now found all over the world. They have been discovered in Russia, China, Brazil, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania.
