Inostrancevia was a very large hunter from a long time ago. 
Inostrancevia had a very big skull. It also had large teeth called canines. Some of these teeth could grow very long. They likely helped the hunter cut through the skin of its prey.
Scientists found many fossils of this animal. Some were found in Russia by Vladimir Amalitsky.

This predator had a very special way of hunting its prey. It had a long skull with large holes on the sides. Its mouth could open at a very wide angle. This allowed the animal to deliver very strong bites. The most amazing part was its teeth, called canines. Some of these teeth could reach 15 centimeters in length.
People first found fossils of this animal in Russia. A scientist named Vladimir Amalitsky led excavations from 1899 to 1914. He worked in a place called Northern Dvina. He found two almost complete skeletons there. These were the first gorgonopsian fossils ever found in Russia. 
Scientists have found many different types of this animal. Two main types are called I. alexandri and I. latifrons. The name latifrons means "broad forehead" in Latin. Another type, I. uralensis, was named in 1974 after the Ural River. More recently, scientists found fossils in Southern Africa. These belong to a new type called I. africana. 
Inostrancevia lived in river areas with many other living things. It was the top hunter, or apex predator, in its home. 
Inostrancevia was a massive genus of carnivorous therapsids that lived during the Late Permian period. These animals were part of a group known as gorgonopsians, which were meat-eating stem mammals. 
The anatomy of Inostrancevia was specifically designed for hunting. It possessed a broad, elongated skull featuring large, oval-shaped temporal fenestrae, which are openings on the side of the head.
Researchers have identified several different species within this genus. Two of the most widely recognized are Inostrancevia alexandri and Inostrancevia latifrons. The name latifrons comes from Latin words meaning "broad forehead," describing its more robust skull. In 1974, a third species, I. uralensis, was named, though its fossil remains are so thin that it might belong to a different genus. More recently, fossils found in Southern Africa led to the naming of I. africana. This discovery was significant because the genus was previously thought to be mostly limited to Russia. 
The history of discovering Inostrancevia is tied to the work of paleontologist Vladimir Amalitsky. Between 1899 and 1914, Amalitsky led excavations in the Northern Dvina region of Russia. He discovered many well-preserved skeletons in freshwater sediments. These finds were among the greatest paleontological discoveries of that era. The genus name honors Alexander Inostrantsev, a geologist who was a teacher of Amalitsky. After Amalitsky's death during the political changes of 1917, his collections were moved to cities like Leningrad and Moscow. 
Inostrancevia was a dominant force in its environment. In its Russian habitats, it was the only large gorgonopsian present. In Southern Africa, it lived in river ecosystems alongside many different tetrapods. 
Size and scale are important for understanding this predator. Inostrancevia was so large that it was rivaled only by the genus Rubidgea. While specific body lengths for every species vary, the genus is defined by its massive scale compared to other gorgonopsians. Its robust skeleton allowed it to function as a powerful, relatively fast hunter. These physical traits allowed it to thrive in the river ecosystems of the Late Permian. Even though it was a successful hunter, the genus eventually disappeared during the Permian-Triassic extinction event.
Modern science continues to refine our understanding of Inostrancevia through phylogenetic analysis. This is a method used to study the evolutionary relationships between different groups of animals. Earlier models placed Inostrancevia close to African species, but newer research since 2018 suggests a different history. It is now classified as a derived gorgonopsian of Russian origin. It belongs to a group that includes the genera Suchogorgon, Sauroctonus, and Pravoslavlevia. Specifically, it is part of the subfamily Inostranceviinae.
