The skull of Gorgonops was highly specialized for hunting. When viewed from above, the skull had a deep, triangular profile. 
History shows that Gorgonops was central to early vertebrate paleontology. Richard Owen described the type species, Gorgonops torvus, in 1876. Owen was a notable scientist who also coined the name "Dinosauria." 
Scientists have identified several different species within this genus. Gorgonops torvus is the type species and had a skull about 22 cm long. It is distinguished by having a longer snout than other members of the group. Another species, Gorgonops whaitsi, was larger than G. torvus and had a wider rear skull. Some researchers, like Sigogneau-Russell, consider G. whaitsi to be a more primitive form. Other specimens, such as Gorgonops longifrons, featured much larger skulls, measuring about 30 cm in length. These variations show the diversity within the genus.
Fossil evidence for Gorgonops is found in specific geological layers. These are known as the Tropidostoma and Cistecephalus Assemblage Zones. The holotype of G. torvus, an incomplete and flattened skull, was allegedly found at Mildenhall's farm in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Other specimens, like Gorgonops? dixeyi, have been found in the Chiweta Beds in Nyassaland. These locations and layers provide a timeline for when these animals lived and died. They help scientists map the distribution of therapsids across the ancient landscape.
Understanding Gorgonops helps scientists connect different branches of the evolutionary tree. As a member of the Gorgonopsia clade, it represents a specific lineage of therapsids. The study of its specialized teeth and gait provides insight into how predators evolved. It also shows how different body plans, like the semi-erect gait, changed the way animals interacted with their world. By studying these fossils, researchers can better understand the complex systems of the Late Permian period.
