Inostrancevia was a huge hunter that lived a very long time ago.

It lived during the Late Permian period. This was in parts of the world we now call Russia and Southern Africa. These animals were gorgonopsians, which were meat-eating creatures. They were part of a group called stem mammals. Inostrancevia was the largest known member of this group. It was so big that only another group called Rubidgea could rival its size.

This predator had a very special way of hunting its prey. It had a long skull with large holes on the sides. Its mouth could open at a very wide angle. This allowed the animal to deliver very strong bites. The most amazing part was its teeth, called canines. Some of these teeth could reach 15 centimeters in length.

These long teeth likely helped the animal slash through the skin of other animals. Because it was a fast predator, it could catch many different creatures.

People first found fossils of this animal in Russia. A scientist named Vladimir Amalitsky led excavations from 1899 to 1914. He worked in a place called Northern Dvina. He found two almost complete skeletons there. These were the first gorgonopsian fossils ever found in Russia.

The name Inostrancevia was chosen to honor Alexander Inostrantsev. He was a famous geologist and a teacher of Amalitsky. The fossils were later moved to different cities like Leningrad and Moscow.

Scientists have found many different types of this animal. Two main types are called I. alexandri and I. latifrons. The name latifrons means "broad forehead" in Latin.

Another type, I. uralensis, was named in 1974 after the Ural River. More recently, scientists found fossils in Southern Africa. These belong to a new type called I. africana.

These African fossils were found near a town called Bethulie. They show that this animal lived in many different places.

Inostrancevia lived in river areas with many other living things. It was the top hunter, or apex predator, in its home.

It likely ate animals called dicynodonts and pareiasaurs. In Russia, it was the only large gorgonopsian around. In other places, it lived alongside animals called rubidgeines. Eventually, Inostrancevia disappeared during the Permian-Triassic extinction. This was a time when many different kinds of life vanished from Earth.
