Unenlagiinae

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Unenlagiinae are a special group of dinosaurs. They are part of the paravian theropods. These animals had very long snouts. Most of them lived in South America. Some lived in Antarctica. Some fossils might even be from Australia.

They are often grouped with the Dromaeosauridae family. Some scientists put them in their own family. This is called Unenlagiidae. They are very interesting to study.

These dinosaurs had very unique bodies. Their tails were stiff. This happened because of long bones called chevrons. They also had very long and thin hindlimbs. Their feet had a special shape. This shape is called a subarctometatarsus. It means the middle foot bone was pinched at the top.

They also had a small second toe claw. Their snouts were much longer than other relatives. Their bodies were built for a specific way of life.

Scientists have worked hard to name these animals. In 2017, researchers named the Halszkaraptor. They studied how Unenlagiinae fit into the family tree. In 2019, they looked at a group called Hesperornithoides. This study included Rahonavis and Pyroraptor. It also included Dakotaraptor. In 2025, Motta and colleagues found new links. They found that Unenlagiidae might belong to the Avialae group. This shows how much we still learn.

There are many important facts about these creatures. The largest one was named Austroraptor. It grew to be 5 to 6 meters long. That is about 16 to 20 feet. Most fossils come from Argentina. Some fossils come from the Eumeralla Formation in Australia. These fossils are from the Cretaceous period. Some might even be from the Early Cretaceous. This helps us know where they lived and when.

These dinosaurs hunted differently than their cousins. Other dinosaurs had wide feet to grip large prey. Unenlagiines had long, slender legs instead. This helped them run with great speed. They could move their second toe very fast. This was perfect for catching small and quick prey. They became different because the land broke apart. This split the world into Gondwana and Laurasia. Being alone on their land helped them change.
