Theropoda

Theropods are a major group of dinosaurs.

Their name comes from ancient Greek words meaning "wild beast foot." They belong to a large group called saurischians. These animals are very important to study. They were the first dinosaurs to appear on Earth. This happened about 231.4 million years ago during the Late Triassic period. They are the only group of dinosaurs still alive today. This is because birds are actually modern theropods.

How did these animals live and move? Most theropods had hollow bones to stay light. They also had three toes and claws on each limb. Many theropods were carnivores, which means they ate meat. We know this because their teeth were often sharp and serrated. Some fossils even show meals inside their stomachs.

For example, a *Compsognathus* fossil had a lizard inside it. A *Velociraptor* was even found fighting a *Protoceratops*. Some theropods also used gizzard-stones to help them digest food.

Scientists have learned a lot about them over time. In the 19th and 20th centuries, researchers found many sharp-toothed fossils. They originally thought most theropods only ate meat. However, new finds changed this idea. They discovered the therizinosaurs, which were actually plant-eaters. These dinosaurs had large bodies for processing plants. They also had small heads with beaks. Other groups evolved to eat seeds, insects, or even fish.

Theropods also had very different skin. Some were covered in feathers or feather-like filaments.

The group called Coelurosauria likely had feathers. Some dinosaurs, like *Anchiornis*, were completely covered in them. Other large theropods had bumpy scales instead. The *Carnotaurus* had skin with many small scales. Some even had osteoderms, which are scales with a bony core. These scales grew on their necks and tails.

These animals came in many different sizes. The *Tyrannosaurus* is a very famous giant. But other giants like *Spinosaurus* were even longer. *Spinosaurus* might have been 3 meters longer than *Tyrannosaurus*. On the other hand, some were very tiny. The *Anchiornis huxleyi* was only 34 centimeters long. Today, the smallest theropod is the bee hummingbird.

It is only 5.5 centimeters long. There are over 11,000 species of these living theropods today.
