Ornithomimosauria were a special group of dinosaurs. Their name means "bird-mimic lizards."

These animals lived during the Cretaceous Period. This was a long time ago on lands like Asia, Europe, and North America. Some might have lived in Africa too. They were very important parts of their world. They were often the most common small dinosaurs in North America.

These dinosaurs had a very specific way of moving and eating. They had small heads with large eyes. Their necks were long and slender. Most had a toothless beak to eat. Some older members, like Pelecanimimus, had small teeth in their jaws.

They had long arms with powerful claws. Some arms were huge. The arms of Deinocheirus reached 2.4 meters in length.

They also had long, strong legs for running. Their feet had short toes with hooflike claws. This helped them be among the fastest dinosaurs.

Scientists have spent a long time studying these creatures. O.C. Marsh first named the family Ornithomimidae in 1890. At first, people thought they were a type of "megalosaur." This was a group used for many different medium or large dinosaurs. Later, experts like Rinchen Barsbold gave them their own group in 1976. In the 1990s, Thomas R. Holtz Jr. looked at their feet. He noticed a special bone pattern in their feet. This helped them run very well.

There are many interesting facts about how they lived. Many were herbivores, which means they ate plants. We know this because they had stones in their stomachs called gastroliths. These stones helped them break down food. Some may have been omnivores that ate small animals too.

Most of these dinosaurs had feathers instead of scales. We have clear proof of feathers from a dinosaur called Ornithomimus edmontonicus. They also lived in groups. Finding many bones together suggests they traveled in herds to stay safe.

If you have ever seen an ostrich, you might recognize them. These dinosaurs looked very much like those big birds. They used their long legs to sprint across the land. Their long necks helped them reach for food.

Just like birds, they likely used feathers to stay warm. They were built for speed and survival. It is amazing to think such fast animals once roamed the Earth.
