Deinocheirus was a truly unusual dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous period. It lived about 70 million years ago in what is now Mongolia.

This animal belonged to a group called ornithomimosaurians, which are bird-like dinosaurs. Most of these dinosaurs were built for speed, but Deinocheirus was different. It was a bulky animal that was not adapted for running fast.

Its name actually means "horrible hand" in Greek. This name comes from its massive arms and strong claws.

How did this giant animal live and move? It had very long arms that reached about 8 feet in length.

These arms had three fingers with large, blunt claws. These claws might have helped it dig or gather plants. The dinosaur was an omnivore, meaning it ate both plants and meat.

Scientists found fish scales and stones called gastroliths in its stomach area. These stones helped it grind up food. It also had tall spines on its back that formed a sail.

Its tail likely had a fan of feathers at the end.

For a long time, this dinosaur was a big mystery. The first bones were found on July 9, 1965.

A Polish scientist named Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska found them in the Nemegt Formation. She was part of a team from Poland and Mongolia. They found huge arms and shoulder bones on a small hill. In 1970, scientists named the species Deinocheirus mirificus. Because they only had a few bones, nobody knew what it looked like. It remained an enigma for almost fifty years.

New discoveries finally helped scientists see the whole picture. In 2013 and 2014, more complete fossils were described.

These new finds included a skull and more body parts. Some of these bones had been taken by poachers from Mongolia. However, a skull was found in a private collection and sent back.

In May 2014, these fossils were officially returned to Mongolia. Now, the remains are kept in the Central Museum of Mongolian Dinosaurs. This helped researchers understand its size and shape much better.

We can compare Deinocheirus to other animals to understand its size. It was the largest ornithomimosaur ever found.

Deinocheirus Scale

Some estimates say it was 36 feet long. It could weigh as much as 6.4 tons. That is a very heavy weight! Its skull was long with a wide bill, much like a hadrosaur. Even though it was big, it had hollow bones to save weight. This is a way that many large animals stay able to move. It was a truly unique creature of the ancient world.
