A Polish scientist named Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska found them in the Nemegt Formation. She was part of a team from Poland and Mongolia. They found huge arms and shoulder bones on a small hill. In 1970, scientists named the species Deinocheirus mirificus. Because they only had a few bones, nobody knew what it looked like. It remained an enigma for almost fifty years.

New discoveries finally helped scientists see the whole picture. In 2013 and 2014, more complete fossils were described.

These new finds included a skull and more body parts. Some of these bones had been taken by poachers from Mongolia. However, a skull was found in a private collection and sent back.

In May 2014, these fossils were officially returned to Mongolia. Now, the remains are kept in the Central Museum of Mongolian Dinosaurs. This helped researchers understand its size and shape much better.

Polish paleontologist Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska found the remains at the Altan Ula III site. She worked with a Polish-Mongolian team during a scientific expedition. The original find included large arms and shoulder bones. In 1970, the species was named Deinocheirus mirificus. For nearly fifty years, the dinosaur remained an enigma. Scientists had very few clues about its true appearance or lifestyle.

New discoveries in the 21st century changed everything we knew. In 2013 and 2014, researchers announced the discovery of more complete specimens.

These included two headless individuals, known as MPC-D 100/127 and MPC-D 100/128. One specimen was a subadult found in 2006. However, fossil poachers had already damaged it. Another specimen was found in 2009 at the Bugiin Tsav locality. These new bones helped scientists understand the dinosaur's full shape. They showed that Deinocheirus belonged to the family Deinocheiridae. This family includes smaller relatives like Garudimimus and Beishanlong.

Scientific understanding was also aided by the return of stolen fossils. Some parts of the specimens had been looted from Mongolia. A skull and hands were found in a private European collection.

After being identified, these fossils were repatriated to Mongolia in May 2014. They are now kept in the Central Museum of Mongolian Dinosaurs. This recovery allowed for a much better reconstruction of the animal. It also highlighted the importance of protecting fossil sites from illegal digging. The reunited bones provided the missing pieces of the puzzle.
