Tuck, who helped the team. Later, in 1966, a second specimen was found at the Voyizane locality. This second find was very important because it included an almost complete skeleton. While scientists know it was an ornithischian, they still debate its closest relatives. The name Heterodontosaurus literally means "different toothed lizard." This name highlights the animal's most striking feature: its specialized teeth.

The dinosaur's mouth was highly specialized for eating. The front of its jaws featured a toothless, keratinous beak called a rhamphotheca.

Behind this beak, the upper jaw contained three distinct types of teeth. First, there were small, incisor-like teeth at the very front. These were followed by long, canine-like tusks. A noticeable gap separated these tusks from the chisel-like cheek-teeth located further back. Because of this variety, scientists believe the animal was an omnivore or a herbivore. Unlike many of its relatives, the tooth replacement in Heterodontosaurus was sporadic rather than continuous.

Physically, the animal had a very specific body plan. Its skull was elongated, narrow, and appeared triangular when viewed from the side. The skull featured a sagittal crest, which is a ridge that provided attachment points for jaw muscles.

The eye openings, or orbits, were large and circular. Below the eyes, a bone called the jugal created a horn-like structure. The body was relatively short and ended in a long tail. Its five-fingered forelimbs were robust and strong. In contrast, the hind-limbs were long and slender with four toes. While some once thought it walked on four legs, researchers now believe it was bipedal.

The discovery of Heterodontosaurus began in South Africa. Between 1961 and 1962, a British-South African expedition found the first skull at a site called Tyinindini.

Palaeontologists Alfred Walter Crompton and Alan J. Charig described and named the species *tucki* in 1962. They named it to honor G. C. Tuck, who supported the expedition. Preparing the fossils was difficult because they were covered in a hard, iron-rich layer. Scientists had to use diamond saws to remove the rock, which sometimes damaged the bones. In 1966, a much more significant find occurred at the Voyizane locality. This specimen, known as SAM-PK-K1332, provided an almost complete skeleton in its natural position.

This 1966 specimen was vital for understanding dinosaur evolution. In 1974, researchers Peter Galton and Robert T. Bakker used its forelimb bones to argue a major point. They used the find to help establish that Dinosauria was a monophyletic group. This means they argued all dinosaurs shared a single common ancestor. At the time, many scientists thought the two main orders, Saurischia and Ornithischia, were not directly related. The SAM-PK-K1332 skeleton remains the most complete heterodontosaurid skeleton ever described. While the skull was not fully described until 2011 by David B. Norman, it remains a cornerstone of study.

Size measurements for Heterodontosaurus vary among different specimens. The most complete skeleton was roughly the size of a turkey. However, other specimens suggest the animal could reach 1.5 meters in length. Some estimates place its body mass at nearly 10 kilograms.

These differences in size might be due to natural variation within the species. It could also be caused by sexual dimorphism, where males and females look different. Regardless, Heterodontosaurus was among the largest members of its family. Other relatives, like the North American *Fruitadens*, were much smaller.

Scientists also use modern technology to study these ancient bones. In 2016, a very complete specimen found near Grahamstown was scanned using the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. Because the surrounding rocks were too hard to remove, scanning allowed researchers to see the skeleton inside.
