Herrerasaurus was a genus of early dinosaur that lived during the Late Triassic period. 

As a carnivore, Herrerasaurus was built for hunting and speed. It was a lightly built, bipedal animal, meaning it walked on two legs. The dinosaur had strong hind limbs with short thighs and long feet. These features suggest it was likely a swift runner. Its foot had five toes, but only the middle three, known as digits II, III, and IV, bore its weight. The outer toes were small. A long tail helped balance the body during movement. This tail was partially stiffened by overlapping vertebral projections. 
The anatomy of Herrerasaurus shows a mix of primitive and advanced traits. Its skull was long and narrow. It featured five pairs of fenestrae, which are openings in the skull. Two pairs of these openings were for the eyes and nostrils. It also had antorbital fenestrae and tiny promaxillary fenestrae. The jaws had large, serrated teeth for eating flesh. Interestingly, the lower jaw had a flexible joint. This joint could slide back and forth to deliver a grasping bite. This is an unusual trait among dinosaurs.
Its limbs also show specific structural details. The forelimbs were less than half the length of the hind limbs. While the upper arm and forearm were short, the manus, or hand, was elongated. The first two fingers and the thumb ended in sharp, curved claws for grasping prey. The fourth and fifth digits were small stubs. The pelvis of Herrerasaurus is similar to saurischian dinosaurs. However, its bony acetabulum, where the femur meets the pelvis, was only partially open. This is a more primitive feature than in later dinosaurs. 
For many years, the exact classification of Herrerasaurus was a subject of intense debate. Because scientists only had fragmentary remains, they could not agree on its identity. Some hypothesized it was a basal theropod, which is a primitive meat-eating dinosaur. Others thought it was a basal sauropodomorph or even not a dinosaur at all. In 1970, Steel classified it as a prosauropod. In 1972, Peter Galton suggested it could not be diagnosed beyond the group Saurischia. 
This uncertainty changed significantly in 1988. A team of paleontologists led by Paul Sereno discovered an almost complete skeleton and skull. This discovery provided the evidence needed for better classification. Most modern phylogenies, which are diagrams showing evolutionary relationships, place it as an early saurischian. Some researchers, such as Thomas Holtz and José Bonaparte, place it at the base of the saurischian tree. Other scientists, like Sereno, favor classifying the Herrerasauridae family as primitive theropods. 
Studying Herrerasaurus is vital for understanding the origin of dinosaurs. It helps scientists explore if dinosaurs are a monophyletic group. A monophyletic group is a group that all descends from a single common ancestor. The study of these early animals helps clarify how different lineages diverged. For example, if Herrerasaurus was a theropod, it would mean that theropods and sauropodomorphs split even earlier than previously thought. This would imply that different dinosaur groups evolved similar features, like advanced ankle joints, independently through convergent evolution.
