It lived in South America a long time ago. Its name means "Herrera's lizard." A man named Victorino Herrera first found its fossils in 1959.

This dinosaur was a meat-eater.

It had a long, narrow head. Its jaws had large, serrated teeth. These teeth were good for biting flesh. Its lower jaw had a special joint. This joint could slide back and forth to help it grab prey.

Herrerasaurus was a fast runner. It walked on two legs.

It had strong back legs and long feet. A long tail helped it stay balanced while it ran. Its arms were shorter than its legs. But its hands were quite long. The first two fingers had sharp, curved claws. These claws helped it hold onto food.

For a long time, scientists were not sure how to group it. They found only small pieces of bone at first. In 1988, they found a nearly complete skeleton. This helped them learn more. Now, most scientists call it a saurischian. This is a group of early dinosaurs.
