Herrerasaurus was one of the very first dinosaurs to appear on Earth.

It lived during the Late Triassic period, about 231.4 million years ago. This animal was a carnivore, which means it ate meat. It was a lightly built creature that walked on two legs.

Its body was built for speed and hunting. An adult could grow to be quite long and heavy. Smaller ones were much smaller in size. It belongs to a family called Herrerasauridae. This family includes some of the earliest dinosaurs in history.

This dinosaur had a special way of hunting its prey.

Its long, narrow head held large teeth with serrated edges. These edges worked like a saw to bite through flesh. The lower jaw had a unique, flexible joint. This joint could slide back and forth to help it grab food.

Its arms were shorter than its strong back legs. However, its hands were quite long and helpful. The first two fingers had sharp, curved claws for grasping. A long, stiff tail helped it balance while it ran fast.

Finding out about Herrerasaurus took many years of hard work.

In 1959, a goatherd named Victorino Herrera found the first fossils. They were near the city of San Juan in Argentina. A scientist named Osvaldo Reig described the animal in 1963. He named it after the man who found it. For a long time, scientists only had small bone pieces. This made it very hard to know exactly what it was. They had many different ideas about its place in history.

Everything changed with a major discovery in 1988.

A team led by Paul Sereno found an almost complete skeleton. They also found a nearly complete skull. This new evidence helped scientists classify it much better. Most now call it an early saurischian. A saurischian is a group of dinosaurs with a certain hip shape. Some researchers still debate if it was a primitive theropod. A theropod is a group of meat-eating dinosaurs.

Learning about Herrerasaurus helps us understand the very start of dinosaurs.

It shows how early different dinosaur groups began to split apart. We can see how they developed special features like advanced ankles. Even before Herrerasaurus, large three-toed footprints were left in Argentina. These tracks belong to theropod dinosaurs from the early Carnian stage. Studying these fossils helps us see the common ancestor of all dinosaurs. It is like finding the very first pages of a giant history book.
