Heterodontosaurus was a very special kind of dinosaur. It lived during the Early Jurassic period, about 200 to 190 million years ago.

Its name actually means "different toothed lizard." This name describes its very unusual teeth. Most animals have teeth that all look the same. But this dinosaur had three different types of teeth in its mouth.

Because of these teeth, scientists think it might have been a herbivore, which means it ate plants. It may have also been an omnivore, which means it ate both plants and meat. This makes it a very interesting animal to study.

Its mouth worked in a very specific way. The front of its jaws was covered by a hard, toothless beak called a rhamphotheca.

Behind this beak, it had small teeth that looked like incisors. Following those were long, sharp teeth that looked like canine tusks. There was even a gap between those tusks and the chisel-like cheek-teeth in the back. The skull was long, narrow, and shaped like a triangle when seen from the side. It had a large, circular eye opening and a bony ridge for its cheeks. This setup helped the dinosaur process its food effectively.

Scientists first discovered this dinosaur in South Africa.

A skull was found during a British-South African expedition between 1961 and 1962. Two scientists named it, Alfred Walter Crompton and Alan J. Charig. They named the species *tucki* to honor G. C. Tuck, who helped the team. Later, in 1966, a second specimen was found at the Voyizane locality. This second find was very important because it included an almost complete skeleton. This allowed researchers to see how the bones fit together in their natural positions.

There are many interesting facts about its size and body.

One complete skeleton was about the size of a turkey. However, other fossils suggest it could grow much larger, reaching a length of 1.5 meters. It could also weigh nearly 10 kilograms. The dinosaur had a short body and a long tail. Its front limbs had five fingers and were quite strong. Its back legs were long and slender with four toes. Most scientists now believe it was a bipedal animal, meaning it walked on two legs.

When you think of a dinosaur, you might think of a giant monster. But Heterodontosaurus was quite small and nimble.

Some scientists imagine it might have looked like a small, two-legged porcupine. This is because they think it might have had long, hair-like structures on its skin. This would make it look very different from the smooth-skinned reptiles we see today. It belongs to a group of dinosaurs called ornithischians. Learning about this small dinosaur helps us see how many different ways life can grow and change.
