It lived about 231 to 228 million years ago. This was during the Late Triassic period. It lived in a place called Western Gondwana. Today, that area is in northwestern Argentina.

This dinosaur is very important to science. It is one of the earliest known dinosaurs. It is also one of the earliest sauropodomorphs. Sauropodomorphs were the ancestors of the huge, long-necked dinosaurs.

This dinosaur had a very interesting way of eating.

It was an omnivore. An omnivore is a living thing that eats both plants and meat. We know this because of its many different tooth shapes. It had leaf-shaped teeth in its lower jaw. It also had curved, saw-edged teeth in its upper jaw. It used three large claws on each hand to grab its prey.

These claws helped it handle food during a meal.

Scientists first found these bones in 1991.

Ricardo Martínez and Paul Sereno found them during field work. They worked with the University of Chicago and the University of San Juan. The fossils were found in muddy siltstone. This was part of the Ischigualasto Formation in Argentina. It took almost 12 months to collect the main skeleton. This skeleton was then sent to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. Experts there worked to prepare the bones for study.

There are many specific facts about its body.

The Eoraptor was a fast runner. Its hind legs were much longer than its front legs. This helped it walk on two legs, which is called being bipedal. Its bones had hollow shafts to keep it light. The main fossil, called the holotype, has a femur that is 15 centimeters long. Its tibia is 13 centimeters long. The name Eoraptor comes from Greek and Latin words. It means "dawn plunderer from the Valley of the Moon."

Learning about Eoraptor helps us see how dinosaurs changed.

Scientists still debate its place on the family tree. Some think it was a basal theropod. A theropod is a group of meat-eating dinosaurs. Other studies suggest it was a basal sauropodomorph. It lived in a warm, humid floodplain with many forests. It shared this home with other animals like Herrerasaurus. Even though dinosaurs were there, they were not the most common animals in that environment.
