Coelophysis was an early kind of dinosaur.

It lived a very long time ago. This was about 215 to 201.4 million years ago. That time is called the late Triassic period.

These animals were small and very slender. They were carnivores, which means they ate meat. They lived on the ground and walked on two legs. This makes them bipedal animals. They are some of the earliest dinosaurs we know about.

How did these dinosaurs live and move?

They were built for moving quickly on the ground. Because they were slender, they could likely run well. They were ground-dwelling animals. This means they spent their time walking on the earth. Scientists use fossils to see how they were built. By looking at bones, we can see their shape. We can also see how they moved through their world.

People have been finding these bones for a long time.

An American scientist named Edward Drinker Cope first described them in 1887. He found bones in New Mexico. At first, he thought they were a different kind of reptile. Later, he realized they were dinosaurs. He named them Coelophysis in 1889. The name comes from Greek words meaning "hollow form." This name describes their bones. Many other scientists studied them later.

One of the biggest finds happened at Ghost Ranch.

In 1947, a scientist named Edwin H. Colbert led a team there. They were looking for fossils in New Mexico. On June 22, a worker named George Whitaker found a claw. Soon, they found a huge layer of bones. This layer had hundreds of skeletons in it. One scientist said it was the greatest find ever made in the Triassic of North America.

They dug up many large blocks of stone with bones inside.

Today, we use these fossils to learn about dinosaur history.

Some scientists have different ideas about these bones. For example, some think the Ghost Ranch fossils belong to a new group. They named this group Rioarribasaurus colberti. This name honors the place and the scientist Edwin Colbert. Other fossils show that these dinosaurs came in different sizes. Some were large and some were small. We are still learning more every day.
