Effigia was a very unique animal from a long time ago. It lived during the Late Triassic period in New Mexico, USA.

This creature was a shuvosaurid. Many people might think it was a dinosaur. However, it was actually a pseudosuchian. This means its closest living relatives are crocodiles.

It had a long neck and a toothless beak. It also walked on two legs. These features made it look very much like certain dinosaurs.

Effigia is a great example of convergent evolution. This is a way that different animals grow to look similar. They do this to live in similar ways.

Effigia had a beak and a long neck. These traits look like ornithomimid dinosaurs from the Cretaceous Period. But Effigia belongs to a different group called Poposauroidea. It is part of a small group called Shuvosauridae. This group includes animals like Shuvosaurus and Sillosuchus.

Finding this animal was a big surprise for scientists. Edwin H. Colbert found the first fossil in 1947. He was digging at the Whitaker Quarry near Abiquiu, New Mexico.

He was actually looking for a dinosaur called Coelophysis. He did not realize Effigia was in the rocks. His team sent many blocks to the American Museum of Natural History. They did not even open most of the plaster jackets.

A new discovery happened many years later. Sterling Nesbitt was a graduate student in 2004. He was opening those old plaster jackets at the museum.

He was also looking for Coelophysis fossils. Instead, he found the remains of Effigia. He and Mark Norell named it Effigia okeeffeae in January 2006. They named it after the artist Georgia O'Keeffe. She spent many years living at Ghost Ranch.

Scientists have studied how Effigia lived and ate. Its jaws were quite weak. Because of this, it was likely a specialist herbivore. This means it ate only certain types of food.

It probably ate soft plant material. Some people thought it pecked for food like an ostrich. However, studies show its skull was not strong enough for that. It used its sharp beak to browse on plants instead.
