It had a long neck and a beak. It also had no teeth. Some people thought it was a dinosaur. But it was not a dinosaur. It was a pseudosuchian. This means its closest living kin are crocodiles.

Effigia looked a lot like some dinosaurs. This is called convergent evolution. That is when two different animals look similar. They both adapt to live in similar ways. Effigia walked on two feet. It had a sharp beak. Scientists think it was a herbivore. A herbivore is an animal that eats plants. Its jaws were weak. This means it ate soft plants. It did not peck for food like an ostrich.

Edwin Colbert found the first fossil in 1947. He was looking for a dinosaur named Coelophysis. He did not find Effigia then. A student named Sterling Nesbitt found it in 2004. He was opening rock blocks at a museum. He named the animal Effigia okeeffeae. He named it after an artist named Georgia O'Keeffe.
