Heterodontosauridae was a group of small, ancient dinosaurs.

They were likely some of the most primitive members of their larger group. These animals lived from the Early Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous.

Fossil remains have been found on every continent except for Antarctica and Australia. Most of these dinosaurs were about the size of a fox. They were usually less than one meter long, including their tails.

They are very important for helping scientists understand how early dinosaurs lived.

These dinosaurs are famous for having different kinds of teeth. This is called heterodont dentition. Many had large, sharp teeth that looked like tusks.

They also had cheek teeth used for chewing plants. Some scientists think they might have been omnivores, meaning they ate both plants and meat. Their mouths had a beak at the tip called a rhamphotheca.

A special gap in the upper jaw helped fit the large lower tusks. This unique mouth allowed them to process food in a special way.

Scientists have spent a long time studying these fossils. Robert Broom created the name Geranosaurus in 1911. Sidney Haughton named Lycorhinus in 1924. Later, Alfred Romer named the whole family Heterodontosauridae in 1966. Kuhn also proposed this name in the same year. In 1962, the name Heterodontosaurus was chosen. More recently, Paul Sereno helped redefine the group in 1998 and 2005. These researchers helped us understand how these small creatures fit into the history of life.

There are many interesting facts about their bodies. The dinosaur Tianyulong from China had tiny hair-like parts called filaments.

These filaments might be a type of proto-feather. This suggests these dinosaurs could keep warm like modern animals. Heterodontosaurus was just over one meter long. Some remains of Lycorhinus might show a larger individual. Their front legs were very strong for their size. They even had a special claw called a "twist-thumb."

You can compare these dinosaurs to many animals you know today. Their teeth worked a bit like the teeth of some mammals. Their strong legs and long lower bones helped them run fast, much like a modern bird.

Even their ankle bones were fused in a way that is similar to birds. This shows how different animals can develop similar ways to move and eat. By looking at these small fossils, we learn how big changes in nature began.
