Most were about the size of a fox. They lived from the Early Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous. These fossils have been found on almost every continent.

They are named for their special teeth. These teeth are called heterodont dentition. This means they had different kinds of teeth. Many had large, sharp teeth like tusks. They also had cheek teeth for chewing plants. Some may have eaten both plants and meat.

Their mouths had a beak at the tip. This beak is called a rhamphotheca. They also had very large eyes. One dinosaur, Tianyulong, had tiny hair-like parts.

These are called filaments. Scientists think these filaments might be proto-feathers. This might mean they could keep warm like mammals.

These dinosaurs were also built for speed. Their lower leg bones were long. This helped them run fast. Their front legs were strong, too. They had a large claw on their hands. One claw was so special it was called a "twist-thumb."
