Rhynchosaurs were a group of reptiles from the Triassic period.

They lived all over the world. Some lived in North America and Europe. Others lived in the southern part of Pangea.

These animals were herbivores. This means they ate only plants. Most rhynchosaurs had very strong beaks. Their skulls were often shaped like triangles. This shape helped them hold large jaw muscles. Their jaws worked like a penknife. The lower jaw clamped into the upper jaw to cut tough plants.

They had special teeth. These teeth formed wide plates. Much like elephants, they grew new teeth to replace old ones. They ate very tough plants that wore their teeth down. They also had large claws on their back feet. They likely used these claws to dig up roots.

Early rhynchosaurs were small and looked like lizards. Later ones grew much larger. Some grew up to two meters long. Most rhynchosaurs lived during the Carnian stage. They may have died out during an extinction event at the end of that time.
