Scientists found their fossils in many places. They found them in Africa, India, and America.

Aetosaurs had many hard plates on their skin. We call these bony plates osteoderms.

These plates grew in four rows. They formed a shell called a carapace. This shell helped protect them from predators. Most aetosaurs had small heads and upturned snouts. Their teeth were often small and round. This suggests they ate plants or many types of food. Some had snouts like pigs to help them dig.

Aetosaurus ferratus

Aetosaurs were large animals that walked on four legs. They had a special way of standing. Their hind legs were positioned directly under their bodies. This helped them carry their heavy armor. Some species were very wide. Others had spikes on their necks. The largest ones could be 3 meters long. They could weigh as much as 110 kg.
