Phytosaurs were large reptiles from a long time ago.

They lived mostly near water. Their name means "plant lizard." This is because people first thought they ate plants. But they were actually meat eaters.

Phytosaurs looked a lot like modern crocodiles. They had heavy armor to stay safe. They also had bony plates on their bellies. One big difference was their nose. Their nostrils were near their eyes. This helped them breathe while swimming.

These animals had different kinds of faces. Some had long, thin snouts. We call these dolichorostral. They used them to catch fast fish. Other ones had wide, strong jaws. We call these brachyrostral. They ate larger animals that came to drink.

Phytosaurs lived all over the world. We find their fossils in many places. These include North America, Europe, and Africa. We even find them in India and Brazil. They lived during the Triassic period. Some lived even longer into the Jurassic period.
