Long ago, this group included many extinct animals. This includes dinosaurs and pterosaurs, which were flying reptiles.

Scientists group archosaurs by their shared traits. Many had teeth that sat in deep sockets. This is called thecodont teeth. These sockets helped keep teeth from being torn out while eating.

Some archosaurs also had holes in their skulls. These openings helped make their heavy heads lighter.

Archosaurs became very successful in the Triassic period. The world was very dry back then. Archosaurs were good at saving water. They did this by letting out waste as a paste. This helped them live in dry places.

They also had strong leg muscles. These muscles helped them walk with an upright stance. This made them very strong on land. Many archosaurs lived all over the world after a big extinction event.
