They first appeared during the Triassic period. Most lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Scientists call the study of fossils paleontology.

A man named Sir Richard Owen named them. In 1842, he called them dinosaurs. This name means "terrible lizard."

Dinosaurs were very different from each other. Some were meat-eaters. Others ate plants. Many dinosaurs lived on two legs. Some walked on four legs. Some were very big. The largest were the biggest land animals ever.

Most dinosaurs laid eggs. Many built nests to keep them safe.

Some dinosaurs are gone now. These are called non-avian dinosaurs. But one group survived. These are the birds.

Birds are avian dinosaurs. There are over 11,000 types of birds today. They are the only living dinosaurs. They evolved from meat-eating dinosaurs called theropods. This happened during the Late Jurassic epoch. Scientists found that dinosaurs were active animals. They had high metabolisms, which means they used power quickly.
